Inside Hapag-Lloyd
Hapag-Lloyd was formed in 1970 by merging two storied German lines — HAPAG (1847) and Norddeutscher Lloyd (1857) — giving it one of the deepest histories in liner shipping. From its Hamburg base it grew into a top-five global carrier through organic growth and landmark acquisitions of CSAV, UASC and others.
In 2025 Hapag-Lloyd partnered with Maersk in the Gemini Cooperation, targeting best-in-class schedule reliability. It is also a leader in fleet decarbonisation, with large orders of dual-fuel vessels and a growing owned-container fleet.
“German precision built on 175 years of maritime heritage.”
